Tools Required: Utility Knife (included in kit), Adjustable wrench to remove door obstructions like handles or locking mechanisms, Spray Cleaner like Windex/409 and wiping rags.
Clean all exposed metal edges and surfaces of the door to be taped. We normally use Windex and sometimes 409 if there is oil/grease present. Make sure all dust, dirt and oil is completely cleaned off of the exposed metal surfaces before applying the double-sided tape. Also, do not apply tape to a door that is wet or in high humidity situations that will cause the tape to not properly adhere to the door or to the foil. Sometimes new doors have a thin film of oil on the galvanized parts, and there is sometimes over spray of lubricant of the hinges on the door, make sure to completely clean the oil off, the tape will not stick to the door if there is oil and this will void any warranty or returns!
Once the door panel edges are clean, measure, cut and apply double sided tape (included in kit) and press firmly onto all exposed edges of the garage door for the reflective foil to attach to. Apply tape when temperatures are above 45°F.
Before applying the Reflective Foil to the double sided tape, make sure the foil is clean from dust, dirt, greasy finger prints and anything else that will interfere with proper bonding to the double-sided tape. DO NOT LAY THE FOIL ON THE GARAGE FLOOR, CONTAMINANTS MAY GET ON THE FOIL AND PREVENT PROPER BONDING! Clean the Reflective Foil and the door frame edges with the enclosed Alcohol wipes.
Remove double sided tape strip and attach reflective foil to the outside frame edges of the garage door panels by pressing insulation firmly onto panel edges and install one horizontal row at a time. Trim excess reflective foil as required. Now enjoy your quieter more comfortable garage!
Do not paint the Reflective Foil, aluminum will not reflect if painted.

Texas Garages believes in offering our customers Quality Products at Reasonable Prices and support after the sale, but it doesn't stop there. We want to inform you of the WRONG WAY and RIGHT WAY to purchase and install Reflective Foil Insulation for your Garage Door. The pictures below show the WRONG WAY and RIGHT WAY to install our Reflective Foil Insulation kits on your Garage Door! You can find companies on the Internet that sell pre-cut foil panel kits and claim R-Values from 10 to 16, but let's explain the facts versus fiction on insulation.
First let's review the installation. The foil panels in the WRONG WAY Picture are attached to the door skin directly, reducing overall "R" value because of not providing an "Air Pocket" between the foil and the door skin. The Air Pocket acts as an additional radiant barrier and increases the overall effectiveness and performance of your garage door insulation installation. Another major error is the panels do not cover the vertical support rails and side frames of the door allowing passive heat and cold to pass through the door into the garage from the exposed metal. By installing the foil on the "entire" door and covering as much exposed metal as possible provides the best insulation performance.
Now "R" values, these mystical insulation property values are determined by 3rd party engineering certification testing laboratories. Anyone can claim any "R" value they want, but ask them if they have independent testing data to support it. "R" values are rated several ways on the same product, for instance "Horizontal" thermal penetration which is usually a ceiling or attic application where the material is laying horizontally for upward and downward usage. Horizontal thermal penetration is always the highest "R" value, and some companies use this value to rate their garage door insulation and this would be incorrect because garage doors should be rated using a "Vertical" thermal penetration rating, meaning a wall or door insulation application, which will always be lower than horizontal. For instance our Double Reflective Foil product is rated at R14.3 Horizontal Resistance and R6 Vertical Resistance, so we use the R6 not R14.3 rating which is more appropriate for Garage Door Applications. Our products have been tested, certified and the datasheet is downloadable below.

Our PanelFoam Garage Door Insulation Kits contain UL® certified Expanded PolyStyrene panels with a High Impact PolyStyrene (HIPS) laminated plastic facer for durability and easy cleaning. The panels are cut to fit the inside channels of the garage door frame rails to make a flush, insulated panelized system that looks great and helps reduce dirt, dust and noise. The weight of these kits will generally not effect the balancing of your garage door operation if your springs are in good condition and properly adjusted. Manufactured from a non-toxic earth-friendly material, these kits are UL® certified, moisture resistant and carry a 1-Year Warranty.
Each PanelFoam Kit comes with (8) panels and is designed to cover one Standard Residential 8' or 9' Wide by 7' High metal garage door. Larger 16' and 18' Wide by 7' High doors will require two kits.

| NOTE: |
Failure to install any of our Garage Door Insulation Kits per instructions provided will VOID warranty. Please contact us if you have any questions prior to installation. We are here to Help! |
1. Question: "Does the PanelFoam come with plastic caps or ends on the material to give it a finished look, like a picture frame?"
Answer: No. The PanelFoam Panels on one side have Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) that goes next to the garage door and the other side has a High Impact PolyStyrene (HIPS) laminated plastic facer for durability and easy cleaning.
2. Question: "How do you attach the PanelFoam to the garage door, does it have double-sided tape or glue?"
Answer: The PanelFoam Panels "tuck" between the recessed horizontal and vertical garage door rails and hold themselves in. No tape, glue or screws are needed.
3. Question: "Would you recommend using both the PanelFoam and Reflective Foil to get the best insulation value?"
Answer: It is not recommended to install both types of insulation products on your door. The reflective foil kit needs a minimum air space of ľ” between it and the door so you wouldn’t be able to do that by attaching it to the PanelFoam. Also, by installing both products with R6 and R4.5 will not give you a total insulation value of R10.7. You only get the highest insulation value of the highest R-value product installed, which in this case would be up to a R6.
4. Question: I have wooden doors, will either the Reflective Foil or PanelFoam kits work on my doors?
Answer: Maybe. If you have standard metal doors and the wood fascia was attached to the exterior of the door, then either kit will work. If your doors are truly all wooden the answer is no. Our kits are designed for standard aluminum/metal doors.
5. Question: I have metal hurricane doors, will either kit work on these type doors?
Answer: Yes, however, most new style hurricane metal doors have smaller panel heights, usually 16"H instead of the standard 20"H and they are heavily braced with both vertical and horizontal bracing. The bottom line is that you can install either kit on these types of doors, it will just be a more involved process to both trim the insulation and gain access to the panels.
NOTE: Do not take off all the braces at once, only take off one brace at a time, install the insulation and put the brace back on before moving to the next brace. By taking off too many braces at once you run the risk of getting your door out of alignment.
6. Question: I have a new home and my garage gets extremely hot in the afternoons, almost unbearable. I have standard garage doors that face the west and get direct afternoon sunlight. Also, the attic above the garage ceiling was not blown with insulation, is the heat problem more a function of the non-blown ceiling or heat through the garage door?
Answer: Both the garage door and attic not being insulated are contributing to your heat gain. The garage door is the easiest, quickest and least expensive to insulate and you can begin to notice an immediate difference. Once your door is insulated you should then contact an insulation expert/company and discuss your attic options.
7.
Question: "Will the additional weight of the fiberglass garage door insulation kits require the garage door springs to be adjusted?"
Answer: Maybe. Each kit adds approximately 11-lbs. to the door. Depending on the quality, age and maintenance of your springs will determine if you need to do anything to your springs. Generally you will not have to do anything to your springs but keep in mind it is possible you may need to have the springs professionally adjusted.
8. Question: I have a roll up door on the storage unit I rent that faces the afternoon West sun and it gets extremely hot. Is there a product I can use on that type of door?
Answer: Not that we have found. Because this type of door "rolls up into itself" the PanelFoam is not flexible enough nor is there a way to attach it. The Reflective Foil doesn't have an air pocket thus reducing your "R" value, plus the door won't properly roll up with the material on the door.
9. Question: Installing the Reflective Foil, am I supposed to stick the insulation to the door frame and to the back edge of the door that folds up, leaving an air gap between the insulation and the garage door? If so, how do I keep the middle of the insulation on each panel from sagging over time? Or should I cut the insulation into (16) individual panels and attach it directly to the garage door, leaving no gap between the door and the insulation?
Answer: You will usually have (4) horizontal rows of panels on your garage door, treat each row separately. Clean all the outside exposed metal edges where you will be placing the double-sided tape, remember, failure to clean the door adequately will not allow the tape to bond properly. After you apply the tape, start at one end of a horizontal roll and using the bottom edge of your horizontal roll as a guide, unroll your reflective foil roll slowly and carefully making sure it attaches to the tape firmly. Your panels are approximately 20” high and the foil rolls are 24” high, so once the entire horizontal roll is done, go back and trim the height of the roll and around hinges, locks, etc. Be careful not to trim too much, key items to remember are trying to create an air tight space between the foil and the door skin and cover as much exposed metal with the foil as possible so heat/cold doesn’t radiate into the garage. The middle of the insulation will not sag because it is attached on all four edges as you can see in our installation pictures above. Do not attach the foil directly to the door skin because you won’t have an air pocket, if you do this you will decrease your “R” value by 50%. Also, do not cut individual panels, by rolling out an entire horizontal roll the installation is much easier and more effective.
10. Question: I purchased the optional roll of White Seam Tape for the Single Foil White Vinyl Garage Door Insulation Kit. Is this tape used to cover the horizontal gaps between the garage doors rows of panels? I am not sure if that will cause a problem when the door opens?
Answer: The White Seam Tape is intended to be used to repair damaged areas to the foil rolls or to seal areas where there may be air lose or gaps around door handles, locks, hinges, etc. DO NOT use the White Seam Tape on the horizontal seams between the door panel rows as this will not allow the "gap" between the panel rows to separate when the door opens and will probably pull the tape and the foil off the door.
11. Question: Is there an expectation of how much cooler the garage will be with the insulation installed on the garage door? Is there a rating system somewhere that can give me an idea of how many degrees cooler we might be with insulation?
Answer: Unfortunately there is no system to determine exact temperature differences you will experience with any of our garage door insulation products. The products are rated with an “R” or resistance value by a certified 3rd party testing organization in a laboratory environment as required by law. An "R" value is then assigned by the testing organization. The “R” value is a measure of thermal conductivity, and describes the rate that heat energy is transferred through a material. The higher the “R” value the better the insulation material.
We can’t tell you how much of a difference the temperature will be with the insulation on your door because of a variety of issues, such as, is your attic insulated, are your side walls insulated? Is there a heat source in the garage like a dryer or hot water heater? Is there air leakage around your garage door? All of these issues factor into how much difference the temperature will be affected.
12. Question: Does the Single Foil White Vinyl insulation have white on both sides? I have small windows on the top of my garage door and just want to make sure that it is the same basic white color on both sides.
Answer: No, the “Single Foil White Vinyl” rolls have commercial grade aluminum foil on one side, that usually goes towards the door to radiate heat and cold back through the door, and white vinyl on the other side that is normally exposed to provide a more pleasing look to the door. If you want the white vinyl to show on both sides I would recommend getting two rolls and tape the aluminum foil sides together to expose the white vinyl on both sides. This will reduce your overall "R" value but will accomplish the look you are requiring.
13. Question: I have two new metal doors that are insulated, however, they seem to be extremely cold. Would your insulation help the new doors even though they are insulated? Which type of insulation would you recommend?
Answer: Yes. You currently have insulated doors, meaning the space between the door skin and the outside frame edges are filled with some type of insulation material. This also means that the PanelFoam product will not work on your door because it is designed to tuck into the recessed cavity between the door skin and the outside frame edges. That leaves us with our Foil Product. Both the double reflective foil or single foil white vinyl will work on your door, however, because these products are designed to have an air space between the door skin and the material, that will not be possible because of the existing insulation. With the air space you could receive up to a R6.0 with the double reflective foil and up to a R4.7 with the single foil white vinyl. Without the air space you reduce your R-value by approximately 50%. Will the added insulation help your situation, YES, you just won’t get the maximum performance of the product because of the lack of the air space.
14. Question: I’m trying to determine if insulating my garage is worth it. There are 4 rows of panels, and one of them is glass. If I insulate 3 out of the 4 panels and the R value for the PanelFoam and Reflective Single Foil White Vinyl insulation is 4.6, then is the overall "R" value actually 4.6 * 0.75 = 3.45 or is it something much worse? I am trying to determine whether or not I insulate it.
Answer: Yes. Your calculations are correct. Take the overall "R value for the appropriate product you want to insulate with and multiply that "R" value by the percentage of overall panels you will be insulating to determine the approximate overall "R" Value. By improving the "R" Value on your garage door, even though not to the highest performance rating, is still a worth while investment.
15. Question: I recently purchased your double reflective foil garage door insulation kit and have one question concerning installation. I understand that the reflective foil installs on the outside panel edges so as to create an air pocket between the insulation and the door skin. However, on each side of the door there are holes that would let air escape and not create the air pocket. Should I wrap the foil around both sides of the door to cover up these holes?
Answer: You can wrap the foil around the door edges to cover the holes as long as it does not interfere with the operation of the door. Some people have used the aluminum seam tape to cover the holes and some have also used pieces of insulation with the double sided tape and covered. Either way should work fine.
16. Question: I'm looking for weather striping for overhead doors, to go on the top and sides of the door, to keep the wind out. Do you know where I might find this?
Answer: Texas Garages does not carry weather striping products due to the variety of products available. We definitely don't like the quality of weather striping products available at the big box hardware stores. We suggest visiting a local garage door company that offers both residential and commercial doors, these companies will usually have the variety and quality of weather striping products to choose from that should meet your needs.

Garage Door routine maintenance is a must to keep them in good working order and save expensive repairs down the road. We recommend the following program be performed as least annually and more often based on usage, climate and other conditions. Consult your local Garage Door Specialist for additional information and maintenance suggestions for custom and commercial doors.
First let's start with the supplies you will need for routine maintenance:
|
Mild detergent and a brush, we use diluted laundry detergent in a bucket
|
Vinyl cleaner (ArmorAll, etc.)
|
Garage door lubricant for hinges, door tracks, chains, pulleys and latch.
|
Socket wrench | |
|
10W30 motor oil | |
|
Rag | |
|
Level |
Clean the exterior of the door with a mild detergent and brush, and if there's exposed wood, be sure to paint it.
Clean the weather stripping (Figure A below) around the frame and bottom edge with vinyl cleaner and lubricate it once every other month with a silicone-based product to keep the weather stripping pliable.
Check your track rails. Use a level to check that the tracks are straight up and down on each side of your door, and if they need adjusting simply loosen the lag bolts that hold the track to the wall and then adjust the track until plumb and re-tighten the bolts.
Inspect the rollers (Figure B below) and replace any that are worn or broken. Most rollers are easily removed by simply loosening the bolts that hold the hinge in place. Remove the damaged roller and the replacement roller can easily be inserted.
Now that everything is aligned and tightened, lubricate the moving parts. Apply spray lubricant to the hinges, door tracks, chains, pulleys and latches. Then apply oil to a rag and apply to the springs to quiet that irritating squeaking noise (Figure C below) and remove any excess oil.
Perform these routine maintenance steps and your garage door will provide carefree convenience for many years to come.
